Screen Free Week

This week Ms. Barrett has challenged students to go screen free at home.  It is a great time to get outside and play a game or explore.  However, if it is like this afternoon, cold and windy, it is also a great excuse to curl up with a book!

Maybe you want to visit some old favorite books or try out a new series.  If you have a book or series that you think other kids would like respond to this post and let’s get a list going!

100 years!

West Woodland 1911- from the Seattle School Archives

Did you know that West Woodland Elementary opened 100 years ago this month?
Here are some interesting school facts:
West Woodland started as a K-8 school.
When the building opened it was already overcrowded.
At one time it was the largest elementary school in Seattle with over 1,000 students!

Some classes have started looking at old pictures of the school and neighborhood and talking about what has changed. We will also be looking at old documents and artifacts as well as interviewing and researching in books and on-line to see what we can find out about our history. It should be fun and interesting. If you have any old documents or photos you’d be willing to share, please bring them in to the library.  Also, if you know any old graduates from the school that might like to be interviewed or might have a story to share I’d love to know about them.

The photo above is from 1911.  The original is in the Seattle Schools Archives.

Hello West Woodland!

Welcome to the West Woodland Library Blog!  I hope you check in often to see what is happening in the library.  I will be posting what classes are working on, upcoming events and news, and places to share your favorite books and ideas.  On this first visit I hope you check out the links and visit my favorite web book marks, check out the pages at the top and then let me know what you think about the site.  It is definitely a work in progress, so I’m looking for your ideas.
